Golden Eagle Luxury Trains is a family-owned British company founded in 1989 and based in Altrincham, Cheshire, with more than 30 years of experience operating private luxury trains across some of the world's most spectacular rail corridors. The Winter Wonderland journey on the Trans-Siberian Express was a 15-day all-inclusive tour travelling through Russia and Mongolia in the depths of winter, covering the legendary route between Moscow and Vladivostok. Every cabin on the Golden Eagle train featured en-suite facilities, a dedicated attendant, L'Occitane toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, turning the journey itself into a five-star experience. The company has been featured in Forbes, Conde Nast Traveller, The Times, and The Telegraph as one of the world's foremost providers of luxury rail travel.
The 15-day Winter Wonderland itinerary explored the most compelling winter landscapes of Russia and Mongolia aboard one of the world's most famous railways. Departing from Moscow, the route wound eastward through vast snowfields and frozen forests, skirting the shore of Lake Baikal along cliff-hugging tracks above the ice. Highlights included a visit to Suzdal, one of Russia's most perfectly preserved walled medieval cities, where passengers could explore the St. Euthymius Monastery and listen to a live choral performance. Further along the route, travellers experienced horse-drawn sleigh rides through iconic winter scenery, watched local ice fishermen at work on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal, and had the option to take a dog sledge or snowmobile excursion. The route also passed through Mongolia, completing a journey through two of the world's most extraordinary winter landscapes.
The all-inclusive fare covered all accommodation on the train and in hotels, three meals a day including a welcome and farewell dinner, alcoholic drinks with meals, and tea, coffee and mineral water around the clock. Guided off-train excursions, the services of train stewards, porterage, all gratuities, and access to a 24-hour onboard doctor were also included in the price. The Bar Lounge Car served as the social hub of the train, while optional Russian language classes and lectures were available during longer stretches. Hotels used on the tour were of five-star standard or best available. Wi-Fi access was limited by the remote nature of the route, with internet typically available at hotels every other day.
The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express offered several cabin categories, all with en-suite bathrooms:
Guests unpack once and remain in their cabin for the full duration of the rail journey, avoiding the disruption of repeated hotel check-ins across multiple time zones.
The all-inclusive fare covered accommodation on the train and in hotels, all meals from dinner on day one through breakfast on the final day, alcoholic drinks with meals, guided excursions, train steward services, gratuities, porterage, and 24-hour access to an onboard doctor. International flights, visas, travel insurance, and excess baggage were not included. Silver Class passengers paid separately for bar drinks and laundry.
Golden Eagle Luxury Trains no longer operates its private train within Russia. The company, founded in 1989 as GW Travel, now focuses on luxury rail journeys through Central Asia, including the Silk Road, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and China, as well as European routes. The Winter Wonderland Trans-Siberian itinerary described here was offered during the company's Russia operations and is no longer bookable in its original form.
The tour was designed with comfort as its priority and has always attracted a mature clientele. The average passenger age on Golden Eagle journeys is 64, with most travellers aged 55 and over. The all-inclusive format, onboard doctor, and luggage porterage make it particularly well suited to those who prefer high-end guided travel without logistical complexity.
In winter, Lake Baikal – the world's deepest freshwater lake – freezes over completely, creating a dramatic landscape of ice and snow-capped peaks. The Golden Eagle train ran along the Circumbaikal Railway, a historic section of track cut into the cliffs above the frozen lake, passing through numerous tunnels and offering panoramic views. Excursions included ice fishing on the lake surface and, on some departures, snowmobile or dog sledge rides.
Prices for the Winter Wonderland Trans-Siberian Express tour started from around 12,895 per person at the time this brochure was produced. As an all-inclusive journey lasting 15 days, this covered accommodation, meals, excursions, and onboard services across the full itinerary from Moscow through Siberia and Mongolia.
Passengers were advised to bring ski-style jackets and trousers along with thermal underlayers for outdoor excursions, where temperatures in Siberia and Mongolia can drop well below freezing. On board the train, the carriages were kept well heated and normal indoor clothing was comfortable. The company supplied bathrobes, slippers, and L'Occitane toiletries in every cabin.
