Salisbury
Ancient… modern… timeless…

Combining medieval magnificence with contemporarmy culture, Salisbury makes an unbeatable destination for day trips and short breaks alike.

Within the historic heart of the city you’ll find excellent shopping opportunities, from many of your favourite high street stores to a wealth of interesting, independent retailers and markets galore. There are cafés and coffee shops, pubs and inns, and plenty of restaurants to choose from. An outstanding programme of arts and entertainment is on offer throughout the year. There are ample activities to take part in, too. While those looking to stay overnight will find a wide range of accommodation in and around the city.

Salisbury Cathedral is the city’s most iconic landmark. Among its outstanding features are the tallest spire in Britain, the world’s oldest working clock, and the finest of only four original 1215 Magna Carta manuscripts. In the surrounding Cathedral Close you can also explore The Salisbury Museum, home to nationally important treasures including finds from Stonehenge; Mompesson House, a perfect Queen Anne residence in the care of the National Trust; Arundells, former home of Sir Edward Heath; and The Rifles Berkshire & Wiltshire Museum, dedicated to the history of two renowned local regiments.

Nearby are the Parish Church of St Thomas, where you can admire the country’s largest and most complete ‘Doom’ painting, and Fisherton Mill, combining galleries and artist studios with a popular café. On the outskirts of the city you’ll find Old Sarum, the original site of Salisbury; Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, a working museum, housed in a World War One aircraft hangar; River Bourne Community Farm, with animals, water-meadow views, a farm shop and café; and historic Salisbury Racecourse, holding 16 flat race meetings between April and October.

If you want to explore further afield, Salisbury also makes an excellent base for discovering all that Wiltshire has to offer, including the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge; the beautiful National Trust gardens at Stourhead; and Longleat, home to the UK’s first drive-through safari park.
